With a record turnout from Aberystwyth A.C. (31 runners) the club

beach running on the prom everyone seemed to enjoy the day. There were some
excellent times posted and numerous PB’s. Extra special mention to our club
medal winners – Delor Harvey 1st V/35 and to John Evans 1st V/60.

Accommodation (thanks to Dave)
For those competing or spectating, good travel arrangements and
accommodation
are an integral part of a successful weekend at London Marathon. There are
plenty of decent tour packages out there, but Weston Running Promotions
(WRP)
offer one of the best - as their extensive website makes clear. Well worth
looking at and giving serious consideration. Details at

Shropshire Young

Yesterday eight of the club’s juniors competed in the Shropshire Young
Athletes Cross Country League in Much Wenlock. Summary results are as
follows:
U11G Ellie Jones (19th), U11B Stephen
Williams (6th) and Ollie Thorogood (19th), U13 G Megan Turner (15th), U15 G
Elinor Thorogood (4th) and Rebecca Ansell (8th) and U15 B Gethin Holland
(5th running as a guest).
The eighth junior Sam Jones was unfortunately
taken ill and could not compete – he’s fine now but it was serious enough
for him not to have any chips on the way home! Full results and pictures can
be accessed from the junior’s page on the club web site

windy. But a short and heavy downpour during the race added to the
challenge.”

South Essex Cross
Country (26/11/06)
While down in Essex for the weekend Martyn and myself decided to run in the
South Essex Cross Country League yesterday before driving back to
Aberystwyth. The event was held at Stubbers Outdoor Centre in Essex and
involved a couple of laps around lakes, over man made hills with loads of
mud but plenty of sunshine. Unfortunately we couldn’t run for Aberystwyth AC
because it was local registered clubs only. With my sister running for
Benfleet RC and my Dad running for his club Castle Point Joggers we had to
choose carefully!! We decided to run for Castle Point – a smaller club that
were grateful for a few extra runners! (and cheaper to join as a second
claim member!)
Hopefully Martyn and myself both managed to
gain a few points for Castle Point because we were their sole
representatives that weren’t vets!

Snowdonia Marathon
(thanks to Tony)
“I approached this race with only one real goal - to finish it - a bonus
would be under 5 hours. Despite dreadful weather on Friday and Saturday the
gods chose Sunday to make things absolutely magnificent. With perfectly
clear skies the race headed up from Llanberis pass with a stiff climb to
Pen-y-Pass where we were rewarded with a perfect view of the mountains and
above them all, Snowdon standing black capped against the sky. From there
the long downhill road gave us beautiful views of the mountains and down
along the valley towards the sea. Entering Beddgelert at 12 miles we began a
long and quite punishing climb which although not as high definitely took
its toll on a lot of people. I used my usual hill technique at this point -
they are just a way of helping me regulate my pace. So I slowed down. At 16
miles I fell into conversation with a chap from Abingdon who helped me
revise my race plan. Armed with a new target of 3 hours to get to 21 miles
it was just possible I complete the course in under 4. I got there on the
second and began the final killer climb starts - 800 ft in just over 2 miles
- its not Trefor Road but it hurts and I settled for as fast a walk as I
could mange. Up across the top we finally went off road (sp Clive would like
this bit) and was back running. Emerging through the trees at 23 miles you
get a treat as you look down into Llanberis - the end in sight!!. The run
down into the town is incredibly tough - you definitely wouldn't want to run
up it - every footfall bringing a hammer blow to the thighs, and your toes
cramped to the front of your shoes. But that doesn't matter you're past the
worst - aren't you? The final mile around the town is a teaser as you dodge
up back roads away from the finish and over a couple of nasty little climbs
- 20 ft, not more- that really test your calf muscles for cramp. Into the
finish there's great crowd support and the guy on the tannoy works hard to
get everyone's name. Dave Powell brought home the club honours finishing in
3:17:21 - 51st place overall and 12 in category - (M45). I managed 3:54:38 -
coming 327 and 26 in category (M50).
All in all this is a brilliant race - every
bit as tough as it says on the label - but so much more than grinding out
miles. The variety of the course, the spread of challenges it provides and
the rewards that go with them make the whole run really engaging. I would
recommend it to everyone.
The last time I was in Snowdon I was 12 - on
a school trip. We set out to climb the mountain and I became separated from
the pack. I didn't make it. Finishing - and finishing better than I could
have hoped - means that I've laid the ghost of the school trip and although
it wasn't my fastest ever Marathon time I think I will treat it as my
personal best.”
West Wales Cross
Country Report (Thanks to Ian)
(Results to follow next week)
“After a long journey from Aberystwyth, we arrived just before midday, the
sun was out but there was a slight breeze, the ground was pretty firm, which
was a good thing as I had come with my trainers to run the race. After a few
hours of watching the juniors & senior women run their races, and feeling
quite comfortable, it was time for the senior men to get ready. There was a
good turn out for this race, so it would be hard to judge how to pace it.
The senior men's course consisted of a short half loop, and then 3 full
loops around the course. When the race began I probably went of a bit too
quickly, as I was up with the leading pack
for a while, which I certainly paid for later, and I found doing laps around
a long course to be quite disheartening times. On the whole the course is
pretty flat, and only a few slippery patches, and one short sharp incline
near the end of the lap, which we had to assault three
times in the course of the race.
I found the race quite difficult in stages,
but was cheered on by the juniors and senior women who were still watching
after completing their races. I hopefully gained some race experience from
this, and will defiantly like to try again next year.”
(Few thoughts on the day – Anita)
“It was a perfect day for running - blue skies, sunny and dry. This was the
first year to my knowledge that we have been able to enter a ladies team in
this event – so well done girls!! Representing the club colours were Lesley,
Helen, Glenda and myself. Luckily the senior women had to cover 6km rather
than the 10k that the men had to run. Huge thanks to Kevin for arranging the
minibus and driving us to Swansea and back. Well done also to all the
juniors that ran representing the club. The results will hopefully be
available next week.”
New York, New York…
Tina completed the New York Marathon on Sunday in 6h 06m 37s and was running
to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign. Well done Tina! Hopefully we’ll
hear more about Tina’s run and money raising efforts when she’s back in the
UK.

“Eli has received sponsorship from Alison Jones Sportswear. She will be
receiving an amount of quality kit from Alison for training in all three
triathlon disciplines. This is a real reward for Eli who shows tremendous
commitment to both training and racing, with excellent results. Alison also
sponsors one of the local primary school hockey teams, showing her own
commitment to sport in the community.”

Adam selected for
Representative Squad for Wales…
Adam has been selected for the Representative Squad for Wales, Under 17's,
to compete in the forthcoming Reebok Cross Challenge in Birmingham on 28
October. Selection for the squad was based on an Endurance Weekend held in
Ogmore recently with Welsh Athletics and his excellent run in the Gwent
League in Cardiff where he finished second in the Under 17 category (seventh
overall in the Under 20/Under 17 Category).
Latest news just in…
There was a Representative Squad of 7 girls and 7 boys (Under 17's) which
travelled from Swansea on Friday afternoon to stay in a Hotel that night. It
was a dry but dull day, very little wind, but a very muddy course in parts
and also a very undulating course.
Adam came in 8th out of a field of 65 athletes. He was the first welsh squad
boy back, the second coming in 17th place, 25 seconds behind Adam.
Adam is only 15 (having had his 15th birthday in June), and was competing
against a year up, so did very well.
Leah (his sister) competed for Aberystwyth AC in the Under 15 category. She
has only just turned 13 (two weeks ago!) and had to compete in the older
section. She gave it her all on a very hard course, and came in at 59th.
Adam (and Leah) are coached by Mr Roger Davey from Aberarth.
Snowdonia Marathon –

Well done to Dave Powell 3.17.21 - 51st overall and 12th in age group and to
Tony Wenlock 3.54.38 327th overall and 26th in age group There were 1046
finishers.

recovered!

peaks of the Rhinor Range - Rhinog Fawr, Rhinog Fach, Y Llethr and Moelfre.
It's easy to get lost in this race, in fact looking at the results one guy
is down as lost....so I hate to think where he is by now! In fear of this
Dave and I spent last Saturday in the hills deciding on the best route to
take. Needless to say come race day, we ignored our carefully chosen route
plan and followed the person we were each behind...there's nothing like
having confidence in your navigational ability!
Anyway, the results are in. Well done to Geoff who was 9th in a time of
3.13.32 and Dave who was 16th in a time of 3.22.11 (although I have to add
that they did get beaten by the first girl!) I was enjoying the route so
much that I took my time (honest!) and finished 42nd in 3.57.46.

Feedback about our
local running/sports services…..I think other club members might find really
useful! (thanks to Bridget)
“As you know I have been having a lot of trouble with my shins over the past
few months which has gradually got worse. I called Kristy at the sports
injury clinic last Monday and she managed to fit me in on the Wednesday. She
gave me an excellent (if not occasionally painful) massage around my shin
and calf area and performed a number of tests on my feet and legs which
showed that I over-pronate quite badly! (I have been running in a neutral
shoe since August so the cause of my pain was then obvious!). Resting,
stretching and putting ice on the area has helped a lot over the past week
but I now knew that I needed to get some new supportive running shoes…Off I
went on Saturday morning, down to Swansea to the running shop ‘Up and
Running’. The service I received was excellent and very interesting! I was
tested and filmed in a neutral shoe to begin with and watching the tape back
it was immediately obvious to see where the problem was. My foot was totally
collapsing inwards and on my right leg specifically my ankle looked like it
was going to pop out! We then tried a number of other shoes until I found
one which was really comfortable and showed on the video that the problem
had been completely corrected. I know that some of you have been tested
before but for those of you that haven’t it is really worth it!! The best
thing about ‘Up and Running’ is that they provide this service completely
for free (but I do think they sort of hope that you to buy some trainers at
the end of it!). The discomfort in my shins hasn’t completely gone yet but
it has significantly improved and will be trying out my new trainers tonight
so fingers crossed!
If you are having any recurring biomechanical problems then I would
definitely recommend you go and see Kristy and/or Up and Running to get some
shoes properly fitted, it definitely has been worth it to me!!”

flying the Aberystwyth AC flag in Cardiff
Well done to Dave Thomas, Tina Hansen, Glenda Roberts, Cliff Thomas,
Rosemary Rhys, Nerys Davies and Karen Rees-Roberts
for taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon yesterday. There were 5758
finishers in total. Full results can be found at:

Cliff Thomas 1.44.48 8th in age group

Rosemary Rhys 2.16.32 44th in age group
Karen Rees-Roberts 2.18.23 929th in age group
Tina Hansen 2.27.14 63rd in age group
Thanks to Nerys (well done on your first half
marathon!) and Dave for a few thoughts on the race…
“Hope your run today has gone well, I'm back
in Aber after completing the half marathon in 2 hours 6 mins - quite pleased
with that for my first attempt!!”
“I hope you didn't lose anyone on the hills
(or over the cliff) yesterday.
Given that it was the first time I've run the distance for two years,
Cardiff was a positive experience for me at least. Someone else may have a
different tale! You can never tell with these mass participation melees. No
official results and numbers seem to be at hand at the moment, but with a
grotty weather week ahead I'll keep an eye on the websites and forward
anything I find for the newsletter etc. My gun time was 1.34.35 or
thereabouts. The chip time won't be much different as I got a pretty clear
start. Where that puts me in 7,000+ starters I have no idea. It was a murky
autumn day with a nagging north/easterly breeze at the wrong places, but it
was never really chilly.”

Excellent running
from one of our junior club members… (thanks to Colin)
Adam Bitchell (aged 15) was unable to compete in the Shropshire Junior
League for Aber on the 24th September, as he was running in the Swansea Bay
races. He competed in the 5k (Under 21's) and came first! His time was
16.15. It was a dry but quite a windy day, with the whole of the 5k being
run into a head wind. He received a winner’s plaque and medal from the Lord
Mayor of Swansea.
A weekend in the
fells......running (thanks to Louise)
It was a busy weekend in the welsh fell running calendar with two races on,
the classic long race in the Black Mountains on Saturday and one of the
North Wales Championship races at Arenig Fawr on Sunday. My main aim was to
survive Saturday’s race, but I think the 'mountain boys' Geoff and Dave knew
all along they were going to do both and after a few revitalising gins on
Saturday night I couldn't let the girls side down.........
Black Mountains Fell Race (17miles 5,500ft
of ascent) The race starts from Llanbedr near Crickhowell and takes you
through the stunning scenery (when the mist and rain had cleared) of the
Black Mountains. There are four main climbs in the race and some great
stretches of ridge running with the course taking you in and out of two main
valleys in the area. The hardest part of the race is the navigation as very
little if any of the route is marked - I think we all managed to go wrong
somewhere, although I can claim the prize for the biggest detour after
heading into the wrong wood and ended up a good mile off course which left
me with a lovely tarmac trudge to get to one of the checkpoints. Geoff
finished the course in 3.17, Dave in 3.22 and I got round in 3.59.
Arenig Fawr (6.7miles, 1900ft of ascent)
Prior to the start the 3 of us were sat in the car listening to the rain
lashing down and pondering what possessed us to think this was a good idea!
We weren't alone as 50 other runners were doing exactly the same. The
weather did clear slightly for the race and I have to admit that it was a
fantastic route which was clearly marked all the way round, and what made it
all the better was that there was a mountain of home made cakes to eat our
way through at the end. Dave finished 9th (3rd 040), Geoff was 11th and I
was 33rd (4th girl).
Laura’s first
running challenge…
Laura joined us a few months ago never having run since school and has been
training regularly over the last few weeks in preparation for the Powis
Castle 10k organised by Cancer Research UK. Laura is running in memory of
her friend Pammy and if anyone would like to sponsor her in her first 10k –
they can do so online:

Scottish Islands
Peaks Race (report from Geoff Oldrid as featured in the Welsh Fell Runners
newsletter Aug 06)
An almighty searing crashing broke our fitful slumber as the great billowing
sail swung round to windward sending the contents of our vessel careering in
all directions. A frightful, seemingly interminable, creaking and groaning
of the protesting rigging was followed by an eerie silence as it eventually
settled taut and recovered, thankfully undamaged. We had rounded the mull of
Kintyre, punching the tide with the wind behind us and before long the huge
spinnaker sent us lunging at a frightening pace towards Goat fell on the
isle of Arran, the final hill of the challenge. Far behind us now in the
setting sun a group of sails could just be made out on the horizon as some
of our fellow contestants in turn braved the angry seas off the peninsular.
Behind us too was much painful legwork…the race had begun pleasantly enough
with a delightfully scenic 10k around the clifftop paths near Oban then a
frantic row out to our yacht, Lightning Reflex (otherwise known as
Frightening Defects). Tonys’ skill on the penny whistle added to the
ceremony of the occasion as he piped rhythmical encouragement to Dave, our
intrepid oarsman. The yacht sped us out of the natural harbour but our
promising start was followed by a painfully slow interlude as we manned the
oars to escape the calm waters at the entrance to the sound of Mull. Once
ashore on Mull, the road from Salen led us to a once fine but now steep
boggy, strength sapping stalkers path which traversed the lower flanks of
Ben More above. Having gained the col our pace quickened, even as we
traversed gingerly the steep scree slopes of A’Chioch to gain the summit
ridge. The steep scramble to the top was rewarded with a spectacular cloud
inversion, a sea of cotton wool stretched below us in the setting sun. A
compass anomaly gave cause for concern as once again we descended into the
clag, but we were heartened by the quick location of the checkpoint in the
corrie below. A tricky traverse ensued, we kept high in the mist, in
hindsight a little too high, and wondered in awe at the terrible fate of the
crew of a crashed aeroplane, as we picked our way through the wreckage
strewn across the mountainside. Another checkpoint ticked, we descended
rapidly dropping from one traversing deer path to the next until we reached
the tarmac as darkness fell. The interminable road back to the coast brought
us eventually to the welcoming mast lights bobbing round in the small
harbour. The 3 man sailing crew made magnificent progress through the night
and we soon entered the shelter of the Small Isles, with inches to spare
according to the depth sounder! We were about to begin our ascent of the
Paps of Jura, looking ominous and unwelcoming in their shrouds of mist. The
myriad of gentians lifted Tonys’ spirits as we tackled the boggy approach to
the first steep climb of these magnificently rugged hills of Jurassic
limestone. The weather only worsened as we crossed the summits and
eventually careered down the unstable tallus slopes to gain an even more
boggy path leading to the road, the yacht and the rough crossing to Arran.
“Is that our hill there?” Tony asked, “..that pointy one that looks like
Cnicht?” as if by magic the glimmer of headtorches near the summit answered
the question, betraying the position of some front runners. The bright
lights of Brodick shone below us as we descended Prospect Hill at a good
pace, eager, by now to get up there and back and get this endurance race
over and done with.

Shropshire Young
Athletes Cross Country League
Congratulations to Catrin Ansell, Rebecca Ansell, Ellie Jones, Sam Jones,
Sion Lewis, Sian Thomas, Megan Turner and Stephen Williams who all
represented the Aberystwyth AC at the Shropshire Young Athletes Cross
Country league meeting at Longford Hall yesterday. In hot conditions all of
them had excellent runs over distances ranging from 1K to 4K. Full results
and race photos will be on the Club web site later this week and in next
week’s Cambrian News. Many thanks also to Megan for travelling down and
helping to manage the team on the day.
The next league meeting is on Sunday 15th
October 2006 in Oswestry. If you would like to take part please contact
either Brian Ashton (bba@aber.ac.uk
) or Kevin Holland
(k.holland@aber.ac.uk
) to book place on the mini bus. If you wish to travel by car
directions are available.
Dale Half Marathon –
thanks to Helen
In a rash moment Caroline John and I decided to do the Dale Half Marathon
today. I am not sure if anyone else from Aber was there. The Dale Half
Marathon and 10K is run in beautiful coastal scenery. Both courses are
described as undulating (it felt decidedly hilly to me!) The organisation of
the races was really efficient with plenty of helpful marshals on the course
and four (very welcome) water stops on the half marathon course. Good shower
facilities and plenty of loos (important for us girlies) added to the
enjoyment of the day. Next year's races are scheduled for 30th September -
well worth putting in your diary. Results should be available shortly:

I’ll leave a copy of the menu on the notice board. Everyone welcome – I have
provisionally booked a table for 20 (already have 16 names) and will need to
know for definite who is coming so that I can let the restaurant know –
thanks.

Running with Shin
pain (thanks to Kristy for this information)
Shin pain is an extremely common complaint amongst runners which involves
one or more of the following pathological processes: bone stress including
stress fractures, inflammation or swelling which usually develops at the
insertion of the muscles; and raised compartment pressure in one of the many
compartments of the lower leg. One of the major causes of all three of these
injuries is abnormal biomechanics, therefore things to look out for are your
trainers wearing down on one side, whether or not you have tight muscles
which can lead to an imbalance; flat footedness (overpronation). If you have
shin pain be careful of overtraining especially uphill or on hard surface;
and worn out shoes. It is vitally important to get a correct diagnosis so
that the correct treatment and advice is given specifically to you. Before
you seek a diagnosis note down whether the pain improves or worsens with
exercise or whether it worsens at night. For further information please
contact me on 0845 177 5006 - Kristy Amies. Aberystwyth Sports Injury Clinic.

Peris Horeshoe
Mountain Race (16/09/2006) – report from Louise
Congratulations to Geoff who came in the top 50 out of a field of nearly 200
taking part in this British Championship fell race at the weekend. This is
one of the toughest fell races around and is over 17.5 miles with some
8500ft of climbing. The race starts in Llanberis and climbs up the inclines
of Dinorwig Quarry over Elidir Fawr, Y Garn and Glyder Fawr before dropping
down to Pen-y-Pass and then takes you back up onto Lliwed around the
horseshoe to the summit of Snowdon, over to Moel Cynghorion and then to the
finish back in Llanberis.
Aberystwyth AC out
in force at Bala yesterday
Four club members; Mark Stieler, John Evans,
Martyn Saycell and myself made the early morning start to register (along
with nearly 500 others) for the annual Bala Standard Distance Triathlon. The
conditions were perfect the lake was still and the wind almost non existent.
This was Mark’s first ever standard distance triathlon (1500m lake swim, 40k
cycle and 10.25k run). We were split into six start waves with the females
starting first and the men following in their respective age categories. The
lake was 16 degrees which sounded ok but the first few strokes were a bit
cold! The bike had some excellent long downhill stretches along the course (and
some not so good long uphill sections!). Once back into transition it was
out on the run with the first 3 miles uphill – very painful! Mark finished
the race in an excellent time of 2:46:22 for his first triathlon of this
distance. John also had a fantastic race to finish 3rd in his category
overall. Martyn was only 7 minutes away from his best time on this course
and I managed a new course PB – so smiley faces all round!

Gyrn Gallop Fell
Race (26th August), Rhiwlas (5miles west of Oswestry) – Report from Louise
I thought I'd stop off (as you do!) and have a go at this one, on
my way to the Yorkshire Dales for a holiday. It's a great little run
and a perfect race for anyone whose interested in getting into some fell
running. It's a 7mile race with 1200ft of climb and was a straight out
and back, including about 2 miles on the road. I came 37th out of 62
runners in 54.37 which was also 3rd Female. What made the event was
the buffet at the end and a huge prize list, I'm sure nearly every one ended
up with something, even if it was a pack of 24 pencils (Dave Powell's prize
for coming first in his age group!). I did slightly better and managed
a water bottle, radio and towel...
Source of the Severn Results
There were 73 runners in total: 26th Louise 78.31 (2nd Female) 41st Adriano
85.17 52nd Anita 91.16 53rd Bridget 92.01 The full results are available at:

Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon –
Report from Louise
There was a great turn out by the club with 20 of us (Pete,
John, Martin, Adriano, Kevin, Wil, Mark, Paul, Richard, Cliff, Sue, Tina,
Anita, Gwen, Bridget, Elizabeth, Megan, Glenda, Helen, Louise) setting the
pace around the Lake :-) on a beautifully sunny day. Whilst the heat
wasn't particularly favourable to running 13 miles, it was perfect for the
picnic at the end and for sitting in the beer garden at the pub on the way
back. There were some great results and special congratulations
for all those who ran their first ever half marathon. I hope (in the
nicest possible way!) that everyone is shuffling around with sore legs like
me today.....

‘Source of the

This was an excellent race on Sunday. Representing the club were; Louise,
Bridget, Adriano and myself. The run began through the forest following the
river and slowly gained height. Once we left the forest the views were
amazing (when the mist decided to clear anyway!). We ran across rocky paths,
purple heather, peat, through strong wind and mist to finally reach the
highest point before beginning a gradual descent back into the forest and
with the sun shining. Bridget came into her own on the downhill appearing
from the mist to come cruising past! This was the second year this race had
been held and I would definitely recommend it! The homemade cakes and tea
after made an excellent finish to the race! The results should be available

Bank Holiday Monday
28th August – Morning run instead…
Next Monday is Bank Holiday. We don’t usually meet but I thought we could
run in the morning instead for anyone interested. It’ll be an early run so
that the rest of the day is free! We’ll be meeting ready to run at 9am.
Everyone welcome!
No official Tuesday
Training through August
Training will resume again on Tuesday 5th September. The Monday sessions
will continue throughout August as usual.
Race the Train –
10k race report 19th August
I don’t think the rain stopped all day! I really enjoyed the route which
felt like an assault course at times– running through streams, across fields,
under branches and across bogs. Jeff and Martyn both managed to lose a shoe
and had to return to find them! The goody bags were great – loads of food,
drinks, free samples, a t-shirt and a medal. The race was really well
organised with loads of water stops and spectators on board on the train
cheering the runners on. I didn’t managed to beat the train despite a sheep
on the track!
I don’t know any results yet but there was a good turnout from Aberystwyth
A.C. In no particular order; Pete Foale, Dave Thomas, Mark Stieler, Tony
Wenlock, Elizabeth Stieler, Jeff Saycell (not a member but we’re working on
it!), Martyn Saycell and me (Anita Saycell).
Dave managed to check the provisional times on the day and “was 54.04 in
70th place. I believe I beat the train in, but not by a lot. It could be
down to the offiical stats”.
The results should be available soon on:
www.racethetrain.co.uk
Apologies to Adriano…
Adriano was the only Aberystwyth A.C. runner that ran the afternoon 14mile
(the morning race was 10k) Race the Train race. His race began in Tywyn when
the train left the station and followed an out and back cross country route
racing against the train. Full results should hopefully follow shortly.
‘Source of the
Severn’
Bridget found out about this race – it sounds really good. “It is the week
before the lake Vyrnwy half marathon (Sunday 3rd sept) and is 8.5 miles
through ‘forest roads and tracks’ which I thought would make a good last
longish run before the half marathon. It does say that you go up into the
hills but it doesn’t say if it has an ascent so I’m assuming it doesn’t go
too high! Anyway I thought I would mention it and if you know of anyone who
has run it before I would love to know if it is really hard or not!!?” See

This Friday
4th August…
Adriano invites everyone to join him in an exciting run from Borth RNLI car
park at 7pm and to join him afterwards in a drink and maybe a bite to eat in
The Victoria Inn.
Monday 7th August
We are meeting at the Leisure Centre as usual for 6.30pm – Unfortunately due
to being away and moving house this Friday - I haven’t had the time to
arrange our coastal path run but I’ll try and rearrange for a few weeks time.
I thought this Monday we could cover a small section from Plascrug to
Clarach and back to Plascrug instead.
No official

Training will resume again on Tuesday 5th September. The Monday sessions
will continue throughout August as usual.
Half Marathon
Schedule from Elizabeth…
“It's a training schedule for the half marathon in September. It's quite
basic & I've promised it to quite a few people.”
www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=99
News from our
junior section…
“Adam (15) is a junior member of the Club. His sister, Leah (12), is also a
member.
They recently ran in the Welsh Championships. Leah ran in the 800m in the
Under 13 Category at Carmarthen and got a bronze in a time of 2.31. Adam ran
in the 3000m in the Under 17 Category at Cardiff the following day and got a
silver in a time of 9.25 (only his second 3000 run). Adam also received a
letter last weekend from Welsh Athletics selecting him to represent Wales in
the Celtic International in Waterford on 12 August in the 800m (he has only
ran one 800 this year in a time of 2.05!). Unfortunately, we are away on
holiday and he is unable to accept the invitation!!”

As most of you may know, Ystwyth is hosting a childrens MTB event at Nant yr
Arian on Sunday 6th Aug. Entries are now closed and we have around 40 from
all over Wales and some locally. I have stepped in as whipping boy on the

of you can help out in this worthwhile cause.
Please call me on 07967 022303 if you can help out. Thanks, Shelley.
London
Marathon 2007 news from Dave…
LM2007 have sent me two copies of their new magazine/entry form for next

my entry sorted. Does anyone in the running club or elsewhere want an entry
form for LM2007? If so, I'd be quite happy to pass my spares on. Closing
date for the ballot is Oct 26th(?). You can contact Dave on

Not content with one
marathon this year…
Tina having successfully taken on the challenge of the London marathon a few
months ago in April is signed up for the New York marathon this November.
Tina is running for her chosen charity Cancer Research. I’m sure Tina will
keep us up to date with any fundraising events etc. we can support her with.
Recent race reports
from club members:
Alison Jones has been unable to run with us for a few months but has been
busy taking part in 3 triathlons, the Race for Life and the 48 mile charity
bike ride from Barmouth to Aberystwyth all since the end of March as well as
continuing to train hard. Her latest triathlon was in Newtown…
“Newtown tri was very windy and the heavy rain cleared up just before the
start - a bit like the weather for the Dyfi Dash. I was slow (as usual) but
not the slowest and finished in 2.05.32. The swim was poor but probably the
best 400mtr swim I've done, the bike (26K) was extremely windy and my legs
were like jelly when I finished it and the run was quite slow (34min) but I
enjoyed it all and actually finished 2nd FSV so got another trophy.

Cader Idris Fell
Race - 27th May 2006
(Thanks to Louise for the race report)
The race started and finished in Dolgellau via the summit of Cader Idris, it
covers some 10.5 miles with around 3000ft of climb. The fact that it had
rained pretty much continuously for the 2 weeks beforehand (although it
kindly stopped for the race), meant that mud was in abundance, up to your
knees in places. 209 runners took part, the winner in 1.22:36. Mary
Wilkinson broke the women’s record finishing 8th in a staggering 1.33:58. 3
of us from the club ran:
6th Felipe Jones 1.32:21

Barcud Coch Trail Race - 17th June 2006
(Thanks to Louise for the race report)
This was a 11.5 trail race around Nant yr Arian and incorporated the UK
short course and Welsh Senior and Masters Trail Running Championships. 120
runners took part, 6 from Abererystwyth AC. It was a tough course especially
in the hot weather and despite the sore feet and aching legs, I'd recommend
it, especially the swim in the lake at the end.
2nd Felipe Jones 1.17:36
5th Geoff Oldrid 1.34:20 (2nd M50)
49th Louise Barker 1.43:47
66th Clive Evans 1.50:19
79th Will Mahon 1.54:08
86th Tony Wenlock 1.57:53
Congratulations to Geoff, who by running the
18mile Devils race on Sunday as well, was 1st M50 over the two days of the
trail running festival.
Apologies to the third runner in the Red Kite
Challenge relay team – the runner was Tomos Hywel, rather than Gethin.
Tony’s thoughts from the race…
“Another first for me - my first ever trail run and it was fantastic.
The start was a bit subdued as we were warned about the weather, the course,
the hills, the water stations, the hills, the emergency water stations, the
hills, the red tape - the only good news apparently was Clive Evans was
being there!!.
I set myself a 2 hour target - I just felt this would be the toughest run of
my life. The highlights were the hills ( I hate hills!!), the views (make
the hills worth the effort), the water stations, banter between the runners,
getting an emergency drink from Peter Foale, finishing, - finishing in
1:57:51 - and seeing the Red Kites at the end.”
Rhayader 5k series…
Also for the record Kevin’s Rhayader 5K time was 20.13 rather than 20.24.
Message from Sara…
Hello co-members!
I used to run with you last summer before moving to France. Well, 8 months
on and I'm still here! I work for a travel company who own a 19th century
villa in the south west of France (by Biarritz/Pyrenees....). Now, you're
all probably thinking that this is just sales talk, but honestly it is
exactly the kind of place that you'd enjoy - situated by the Pyrenees
amazing hiking, cycling, running opportunities, 200km of sandy beaches
brilliant for the family and for you to experience surfing in Europe's surf
capital, fantastic vineyards in the Bordeaux region and in the Pyrenees yes,
you'd all love to a tour around vineyards on bikes (!), and a fantastic
villa that you could hire either exclusively or per room that has a heated
outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, 4 course gourmet meals and barbecues
by the pool, spa treatments the ultimate exclusive and luxurious activity
holiday.
It would be fantastic to see you all again - we could even organise a
brilliant training session in the Pyrenees...!
If you'd like to know more about the holidays, either visit the website on
www.qsun.co.uk or
send us an email on info@qsun.co.uk
Hope to see you this summer and good luck in
your races,
Sara xx

Penmaenpool 10 mile
trail race Saturday 7th October 12 noon.
www.run-meirionnydd.co.uk
Description from the website…
“A 10 mile race on well surfaced track in the South of the Snowdonia
National Park. The race follows the course of the old railway line which
runs from Penmaenpool to Morfa Mawddach, now commonly referred to as the
Mawddach Trail. At approx 4 miles the race leaves the railway line and
follows a grassy public footpath (0.5 miles taped route) toward Fegla Fach
before rejoining the Mawddach Trail for the home run. The course is VERY
flat and apart from the stretch of grass path should lend itself to good
speed.
If this isn’t the most gorgeous race location you’ve ever been to, then it
must it must have been foggy.....................again!”

Ladies 5k League
Race Timetrial tonight
Meet at the Leisure centre as usual and we’ll warm up out to the start and
meet you at the finish with water and chocolate!!
Mixed League 5k
Timetrial to be rearranged…
This Tuesday training session (2oth June) is at Nant Yr Arian. We meet in
the car park just before 6.30pm. The rearranged date for the mixed league
timetrial will be announced shortly.
Rhayader 5k series…
Tony had an excellent run in the first race of the series - as his first
race at this distance he automatically got a PB (Personal Best) “I ran the
1st Rhayader 5k at the end of May. It was my first ever run over that
distance and so I pb'd at 21.38.14. I thought it was a fantastic run, chilly
to start but a great feeling at the end”.
Another very good turnout from our club for
the final 5k race in the series. The organiser thanked our club for the club
attendance and support for the series.
With a bit of a headwind on the way back it
was felt that some of the times were generally down on two weeks ago. Pete
had another very strong run to finish with 18.52, Ian ran a another good
race to finish in 20.22 which was one second away from his PB. Kevin Holland
finished in 20.24 closely followed by John Evans. Adam had a superb race
again and won with a sprint finish in 16.04. This meant he picked up the
overall series winner. John Evans won the over 60’s overall winner and
Elinor Thorogood came 2nd in the overall series for the mile races for the
Senior Girls and Ollie Thorogood 2nd in the mile race series for the Junior
Boys.
Red Kite Challenge…
Thanks to Ian for a report from the Sunday race.
“We had two teams running the 18 mile race on
Sunday, one comprising of Adriano, Kevin & Gethin? the second team comprised
of one of the race organisers, Geraint and me were the other two.
There were 40 runners & walkers doing the
whole 18 mile event and 7 relay teams, the conditions were perfect for
running as the weather was cool, with a slight breeze and the ground was
solid for most of the route.
Adriano's team finished 9th overall in a time
of 02:26:25 The team I was in finished 12th overall in a time of 02:31:49
Adriano's team was the 2nd relay team to come
in and my team was 4th.”

Excellent
club turn out for the first Rhayader 5k race
The club had
10 runners representing Aberystwyth A.C. this was a superb turnout
considering the wet and windy weather. Congratulations to Shari, Lynette,
Karen and Anna for all running PB’s
and to Brian for an
excellent time which will give him some important points for the league!
Few thoughts on the race from Shari…
“on the way up it was belting it down with rain and the wind was strong so I
was wondering what id let myself in for! It was still the same until about
5mins before the race then the rain stopped and the wind died down and the
conditions were great for running so that was a great relief. I went off a
bit quickly as I did the first mile under 7minutes so I ran out of steam
towards the end leaving Lynnette fly past me, I’m sure as I crossed the
finish line I heard the lady shout 24mins 09secs, so if I heard right that
would be a new PB for me”.
“All in all in was a good evening, I really enjoyed myself”.

Top
result for Louise in the Sarn Helen hill race…
“Sarn Helen
Hill Race: 16.5 miles with 3000ft of ascent over a mixture of road, cross
country and fell. Aside from the issue of wondering if I could do it, the
biggest dilemma was what to wear on your feet - fell shoes can be really
uncomfortable on the road and wearing road shoes means that you usually end
up on the floor at some point off road. I opted for the grippy trail shoes
and made it round in one piece with only a few blisters. The winner ran
round in a staggering 1.45, whilst the 1st lady came in in 2.04. I managed
2.23 and was 4th lady, which was also 1st in my age group“.
Excellent
result in the Frenchay 10km from new club member Dave Thomas…
Representing
Aberystwyth A.C. Dave ran this race in 43.00mins earning him 47th
overall out of a field of 574 runners and 3rd place in the V50
category.

Excellent results
from everyone that ran the Borth Beach Run
As well as a fantastic turnout from Aberystwyth A.C. ladies and men - the

all the way to the 5k turnaround point. There are some uncollected prizes
for winners that I’ll hand out Monday.
The under 16’s also battled well against the
wind to turn at the 2.5km turn to complete the 5k. With some very young

“The race at the weekend was over the Llantysilio Mountain, just to the west
of Llangollen. the race went from the village of Rhewl and covered a 6.1
mile loop with 2100ft of climb taking in the main summits of the mountain
range. It was a tough race with some very steep climbs and rocky descents,
but with stunning views (not that I saw much of them I was too busy battling
against the wind!). Geoff and I were there from the club. Geoff had a strong
run finishing in 21st place and I came in in 51st around 1hr 10. “

A message posted
from the 2006 marathon girls…..
A Fantastic Evening…
Glenda, Hannah and Tina would like to thank everyone who helped make the
evening such a success, especially Anita who worked so hard getting it all
together, sorting out tickets, bands, advertising etc.etc. Thanks also to
Martyn who manned the door and David James who had to sort out the raffle!
We would really like to thank the two bands who were brilliant and made the
evening such fun and the Rugby Club for the use of the room. Thanks also to
everyone who came along and to those who donated so many raffle prizes. It
wasn't just a successful fundraising event, but also a fantastic evening out
with such a good atmosphere- people really enjoyed themselves. Thanks again
to everyone involved.
Is there anyone out
there who likes Karaoke?
Tina and Glenda are holding a Karaoke night to help raise funds for four
ladies running the London Marathon in aid of SENSE and The Stroke
Association. It is on April 6th in The Gogerddan Arms, Llanbadarn Fawr at
8pm. Entrance is free but there will be a raffle and a competition to raise
money. So if you know anyone who likes Karaoke tell them about it!
Louise ran the tough
Ras yr Aran Fell Race with an excellent result…
“10 miles with 2500ft of ascent. The race started from LLanuwchllyn and was
an out and back route, climbing 5 miles to the summit (which I thought would
never come) of Aran Fawddwy, which was hidden in the cloud and still covered
in snow! Geoff and I ran from the club and were cheered on by Clive. Ras yr
Aran results are out: Geoff was 23rd in 1:56.25 making him 4th O/50 and I
was 51st in 2:10.39 coming home 2nd lady. “
Dyfi Dash Triathlon
The local triathlon in Machynlleth saw 133 competitors from all over the UK
from Ludlow to Leicester finish the course. The race started with a 400m
swim in the pool, a 19.8km cycle and a 6.3km run out to Forge and back.
Aberystwyth A.C. were represented by Elizabeth’s husband Mark, Alison, John
Evans, Martyn and myself. Taking part in the relay teams also from the club
were Elinor and Alex Thorogood and Shelley. (Hope I haven’t missed anyone!)
Big thanks to Louise coming up to watch and cheer us all on!
Alison had an excellent race and looked very
comfortable finishing in 1h 50min and winning her age group for local female
– an excellent performance for your first triathlon!
I really enjoyed the race and managed to
finish 3 mins quicker than last year winning 3rd open female and first open
female – which made up for not even making the start line in Rhayader the
week before!

IMPORTANT - Club AGM
date has changed
As soon as a new date has been arranged I will circulate the details.
IT’S A SELL OUT!!
All the tickets have been sold for the live band charity night this Friday
(24th March). There will be raffle tickets for sale during the first half of
the evening for the chance to win some excellent prizes – so come with a few
spare coins to help us raise as much as we can for Sense and The Stroke
Association – charities being run for in the London Marathon by Tina, Glenda
and Hannah. Thanks to everyone that has helped to sell tickets and collect
raffle prizes – nothing left but to enjoy the evening!!
An excellent few
weeks for Aberystwyth A.C. runners…
Well done to our 2 club runners Adriano and Tina in the Liverpool Half
Marathon. Tina was running her first half marathon as preparation for London
in a few weeks and ran an excellent time 02:26:30. Bridget was also running
her first ever half marathon in Silverstone and had an excellent run to
finish in 02:02:54.
With a record 9 runners from Aberystwyth A.C.
running in the 5mile race in Rhayader (league race) despite the cold and
windy weather there were some more excellent performances – Anna ran a very
strong race to finish in an excellent time for her first race. Delor had
another solid run to finish 28th overall and Louise ran a storming run to
finish 16th overall and 3rd lady. All the points have been worked out for
our club league and can be viewed at:
http://users.aber.ac.uk/aiv/aberystwyth_ladies/clubleague2006.xls
.
In the Rhayader Round the Lakes 20 mile race
there were 4 club runners that all had excellent runs – Geoff 2:25:59, Arwel
James 2:27:38, Hannah Jones 3:05:36, Glenda Roberts 3:06:06. I’m sure if you
speak to any of the runners there are tales of snow, numb fingers and tough
climbs… … I bet London will seem a breeze in April compared to this race!
The full results are available at

Good luck to Alison
taking part in her first triathlon in Machynlleth

Congratulations to
everyone that ran in Ras Cors Caron Half Marathon on Sunday
The club were very well represented with 10 runners taking part. Leaving
Plascrug in the morning the sun was shining and the skies were blue, as we
approached Tregaron the skies turned grey, the temperature dropped and it
looked like snow! It was just a battle to stay warm for the start. Once the
race began we all quickly warmed up with 6 miles of undulating hills before
dropping onto the Bog and following the railway line back towards Tregaron.
At the finish we were all greeted with our well deserved t-shirts, water and
free cawl in the rugby club. Out of us ladies running I think everyone ran a
personal best. Helen knocked nearly 5 minutes off last years time, Hannah
had a storming run and finished looking as if she could run it again (obviously
a good sign that the marathon training is going very well!), Delor had an
excellent run and set a new personal best time for this distance and I
managed a new PB by 20seconds!
The full list of results should be available soon at this address:

Support Bridget
running her first Half Marathon for Crimestoppers
“Hello everyone! I would just like to let you know that I am running the
Flora Adidas half marathon on March the 19th to raise money for
Crimestoppers. With so many brilliant long distance runners in the club I
know that a half marathon might not sound too gruelling to some of you but
for me it will be a massive achievement (if I get to the end that is!).
I chose to support Crimestoppers in this race because I feel that crime is
such a big issue in society these days. Without mechanisms such as anonymous
call centres and programmes such as ‘Crimewatch UK’ many criminals would
still be walking our streets to this day and possible going unpunished for
further crimes. For further info about the charity please follow the link
below:
http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/
As an incentive I am setting a ‘guess my time’ game with a prize for whoever
comes closest! If you are a regular lottery player or buy the odd scratch
card perhaps this week you could use your pound to try my game instead and
be safe in the knowledge that your money is going towards a good cause!
I will be bringing my sponsorship form etc along with me on Monday for
anybody who is interested!
Thank you
Bridget

Well done to Glenda in the
Lliswerry 8 mile race last Sunday and to Louise in the Tarren Hendre Fell
Race last Saturday
“Sunday's run was an 8 mile run in
Lliswerry near Newport. It was a perfect race for all abilities - it's
completely flat and is all on quiet country lanes with some pleasant views.
It was incredibly cold and windy but I enjoyed the run- very friendly crowd.
The only complaint I have is that the showers were cold at the end of the
race- maybe if I'd managed to run quicker I'd have had a hot one!!” (I’ve
just seen the results and Glenda came 2nd in her category – excellent result
well done!!)
“This race forms part of the Meirionnydd
Winter Race series and covered 6 miles with 2000ft of ascent. The route went
from the forestry just outside Abergynolwyn and took you up very steeply (hands
and knee stuff in places!) to the summit of Tarren Hendre and then looped
you back down to the start. Pete, Shelley and I did the race. I think Pete
was 43rd, I was 44th about 10 secs behind him in 1.08, I'm not sure what
Shelleys position was but he did it in 1.15. Pete was 6th over 50, and I was
6th girly. Great fun was had by all!” (Louise was only 6 seconds behind Pete
– he’d better watch his back in the next Fell Race!!)
