HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR!!

Last news of 2005!!

Good Luck Alison
Alison will be leaving us for a few months while she uses her Monday evening to swim train for the Dyfi Dash. We wish her all the best over the next few months in her preparation for the triathlon. If anyone else is interested in entering the local triathlon in Machynlleth either as a team or individually I’ll circulate entry forms when available.

More London Marathon Mania for 2006!!
Congratulations to Glenda and Tina having confirmation of their place in the London Marathon running for the charity ‘Sense’, which is a charity for the deaf-blind children. We’ll definitely have to get our heads together in the New Year for ways to raise money for Hannah, Glenda and Tina for their chosen charities.

Don’t forget to let us know if you would like company on your longer steady weekend runs!

Aberystwyth A.C. ladies represented in the Merthyr Mawr Xmas Pudding 10k Race…
The things we do for some free food! Glenda took part in the Christmas Pudding race this year which sounded like an excellent run. The course is described as “a challenging multi-terrain one-lap course starting at Europe’s biggest sand dune, the Big Dipper. The course is a tough run even in good weather and although the race is demanding it is enjoyable”. You would have to ask Glenda if this last bit is true!! The Christmas puddings given out at the end of race must have made all the mud and hills worthwhile!

An excellent suggestion was made for the club to have a Christmas run for next year. We’ll definitely organise something for Christmas 2006, something along the lines of Christmas puddings, mince pies, mulled wine etc afterwards!!

Race Fixtures for 2006
At the beginning of next year I’ll send out the local races for 2006. Hopefully I’ll be able to provide the details about the new club league for 2006 whereby 10 local races of different distances are selected and your best 4 will count. Each race you run will gain you points. The prize giving will be at the end of the year in various age categories and to the overall winner. Watch this space for more info!!!

Monday night sessions for 2006
We start back on Monday 9th January 2006 in the foyer at Plascrug Leisure Centre for 6.30pm – see you all next year!

A win for Holly…
Well done to Holly crossing the finish line for the 10k as first under 20 female – an excellent result for your first race! Ras Y Mast results
Organised by the Sarn Helen Running Club, Ras Y Mast on the Runners World website was described as “multiterrain, rural and hilly!” Louise ran the tough 6.5 miles representing Aberystwyth A.C. along with two other male club runners, Adriano and Geoff. Flying the flag high for us ladies Louise came in 7th female, which placed her 3rd in her category winning a big box of chocolates in a superb time of 55m59s! This was 5mins quicker than her time last year – well done!!

New club coaches
Congratulations to our newly qualified Level 1 Athletic Coaches. Twelve members from the club travelled down to Swansea to take the Level one Athletic Coach Award, which included Claire, Shari, Louise and myself. As well as having loads of fun throwing foam javelins, jumping in sand pits and walking races, we learnt loads of useful info and tips making it a really worthwhile day.

Pembrey West Wales Cross Country
Last Sunday eleven Aberystwyth A.C. runners travelled down on the bus down to Pembrey, stopping for a tasty Morrison breakfast on the way! The weather was excellent making the ground firm and not too muddy. The course was flat and around grass and woodland with one small hill which us ladies only had to run twice while the men had to attack three times!  The star of the day was Lauren Harries with an excellent run to come first in the Under 13 girls race for Aberystwyth A.C. She had also won the Welsh Schools race the week beforeAnother two young new recruits to the club both had excellent runs in the Under 15 Girls 4km race, Elinor came 3rd and Alex 9th in the West Wales Cross Country Race. Myself and Louise ran in the Senior ladies West Wales 7km race, Louise ran a strong race to finish 6th and I came in 10th. All of the girls that ran for Aberystwyth A.C. gained a place to run for West Wales in the Wales Inter-Regional Cross Country in Brecon, unfortunately it’s the same day as the Aberystwyth 10k!

Last Sunday Glenda ran in the ladies only Kay Pritchard Memorial Race organised by Les Croupiers Running Club. The race was a two lap 5 mile race around Pontcanna Fields and Sophia Gardens in Central Cardiff. Running for Aberystwyth A.C. Glenda finished in an excellent time of 40m30s earning her 19th overall lady and 3rd in her category – a very big well done!!

Llys Y Fran Trail Race
I ran the Llys Y Fran Race in Pembrokeshire on Sunday organised by Cardigan Running Club. It was an excellent 6 mile course on trails around the reservoir with plenty of undulating hills. It was a fantastic crisp clear day making it a really enjoyable race with a field of over 80 runners. I’d definitely recommend the event if anyone fancies running it next year! I thought this race might be the chance to get my revenge after being beaten by 2 seconds by my husband in Abergele. It wasn’t meant to be, he beat me by 2 minutes!! Maybe next time....

5k time trial results from Monday 7th November
Congratulations to everyone that completed the windy and wet 5k time trial on Monday. There were some excellent times posted by everyone that ran. Abergele 5 mile race on Sunday 6th November
Myself, Bridget and Martyn set off from Aberystwyth in the pouring rain but as we headed north the weather cleared and the sun came out all day. When we arrived in Abergele it was perfect, there was little wind, the sun was shining and the roads dry. The 5 mile course had a couple of big hills which made it challenging and a tough five miler! The route was really scenic through small villages and along country lanes and very well organised with over 250 runners from all over North Wales. The race incorporated the North Wales Championship which Bridget was qualified to compete in. In her first race representing the club, Bridget had a storming run, she has only been running since July and this was her first five mile race which she completed in an excellent time of 44m22s which earnt her 2nd place in the U23 North Wales Championship. Martyn and I also had a good run with a battle between us in the last mile which Martyn won, beating me by 2 seconds!!
