History of the Aberystwyth- Cardiff Microbiology Meetings at Gregynog Hall

(1971-2003)

The idea of an annual Cardiff-Aber meeting was the brain-child of Professor David E. Hughes, when it was announced in 1970 that Microbiology would be established as a new BSc scheme at Aber under the leadership of Professor Gareth Morris.

These meetings were hugely successful (1971-2003) and popular, especially with undergraduates, and became a valued part of student life. Indeed when a request was made in 1994 for short essays, reminiscences of Cardiff Old Microbes, for our Festschrift for Prof. Hughes in his 80th year, the Gregynog meeting was for many, high on the agenda.

Even those attending almost 30 years earlier were able to recall the football, croquet, drinking and other activities (including a risqué film depiction of Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', which led to the swift exit of a Baptist academic staff member). Everyone learned a lot!

In 2004, the 1st All-Wales Microbiology Meeting was held at Gregynog, involving participants from Bangor, Swansea and Glamorgan.
