AS30020: America in the era
of the Cold War
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Speech From Richard Nixon Addressing a
Hollywood Audience
You are gathered here
today as one of the leading, most well-respected institutions in American
society. It is as your presidential candidate that I address you, hoping that
I may direct your attention towards the immediate threat which looks set to
tear down the very fabric of our democracy.
As you are all aware, this is a time of great
caution. Communist traitors are at work in our great nation and have succeeded
in infiltrating every aspect of our society. It is our duty as leaders of the
democratic world to rid our country of these traitors. If we cannot claim to
be free of them at home, how can we succeed in our endeavours abroad?
More specifically
though, it is your duty as Hollywood executives to ensure that these
Communists do not go unnoticed. Few mediums have the power to influence
as well as films and so I ask you to do everything in your power to
heighten public awareness of these issues. Do not lie under the pretence
that these forces will remove themselves. It is only through collective
effort that any real progress can be made.
It has occasionally
been said that Hollywood's sympathy to this cause may not be as complete
as is necessary. I know this to be a lie. Do not let anti-American films
prevail in this time of need. I am sure that you will all join with me in
praying for the swift end to our Communist problem. And in doing this and
working together, that end may be closer than any of us could have ever
expected.
God Bless America!
R. Nixon
