Marking Scheme and Feedback Assistant - Help - Introduction

Module tab

The Module tab holds the module overview information, the student cohort, and the year for this instance of the marking scheme. Loading, saving, creating and merging marking schemes is done from the File menu (New, Open…, Merge Marking Scheme(s)…, Save, Save as Template…) rather than from buttons on this tab.

Module details

Module The formal module identifier.
Title The descriptive module title.
Marking scheme name Used as part of the saved file name - often the module code or a condensed title.
Version A number stored with the marking scheme for your own reference.
Year The cohort year, included in the marking scheme file name. A format such as "2026-2027" is suggested.

A marking scheme with no students yet can be saved as a template (File > Save as Template…) as soon as the module details above are provided.

Loading a student list

The File containing student list field and Load student list button import a cohort from an Excel (.xls/.xlsx) or comma-separated (.csv) file. The four row/column fields below them (Row containing first student, Student ID column number, Student name column number, Student email column number) tell the importer where to find the data - the first row and column in the file is numbered 1. Existing marks for a student already in the scheme are preserved when the list is reloaded, so a student list can be updated part-way through marking.

Take care to check that the first and last student have been included - files sometimes have a different number of header rows than expected.

The student list and cohort editing

The student list on the left shows every student in the cohort; the panel to its right shows the ID, Name and Email of whichever student is currently selected, and lets them be edited directly. Add/delete/reorder controls appear under the list if cohort editing is enabled - on by default, see ModuleTab.StudentList.AllowEdits on the Settings tab.

Student IDs must be correct - all marks, feedback and generated spreadsheets are indexed by this number, and changing it will lose that student's existing marks. Removing a student from the list keeps their ID (and any marks/feedback already recorded) available in the background; re-adding a student with the same ID restores it.

Saving

The Save button at the bottom of the tab saves the full marking scheme, including students, marks and feedback. Use File > Save as Template… to save a copy with all student-specific data stripped out, ready to reuse for a new cohort or a resit.
