Marking Scheme Generator - nns@aber.ac.uk - 17 Jan 2011

Creating Exam Spreadsheets:
Marking Scheme and
Feedback Generator Tool
Basically all you need to do is: run the tool; load one of the templates;
fill in the module code; open the student list from ASTRA; and press
the button to make the marking workbook. Here are the blow by
blow details.
- Download the msg.jar file and run it (double clicking works on most systems)
- To save time, download a template scheme (below) for the exam. Use the closest match - you can modify it to suit.
- Click on the `Load existing marking scheme' button in the tool, and navigate to the template downloaded (Module tab, tool will open on this one by default)
- Enter a module code and module title.
- You might also want to change the marking scheme (file) name to something sensible. e.g. the module code.
- Open ASTRA and get report STR06010 (or ask Janet to get it) and save it as a .csv file. See below for details.
- Check: The student ID, Name and email will be loaded from the columns
specified. For STR06010 use 1st student row=5; ID column=1, name
column=2, email column=5. These should be the default on the
template.
- Click the `Load student list' button.
- Check: The students should appear
under the button. Check they appear as e.g."102999999
Bloggs, Joe (jjb99)". If this is not the case check the columns match
the .CSV file - e.g. if a different report was used.
- Fill in the `Year' field for the cohort just loaded.
- Select the Spreadsheet tab and hit the `Create marking spreadsheet' button. (Alternatively you can enter marks on the results tab and then generate the populated spreadsheet.)
- Some messages will appear in the messages area at the bottom of
the tool, ending with "SUCCESS. Spreadsheet saved as: " and the folder
and name of the .xlsx file created.
- The Workbook has several sheets (mostly relevant for assignment marking). For exam marking use the `Exam Picking' sheet. The Results sheet contains the results for each exam and assignment. The Summary sheet contains results for each assignment plus the question marks for the exam, returned mark, failure codes column.
To modify the scheme use the Assessments tab and use the lists to
add/remove questions, change the marks or weighting etc. and create the
spreadsheet again (before marking on it!).
As an alternative to filling in marks on the spreadsheet, the marks can
be entered on the 'Results Tab' of the tool. The spreadsheet can
be generated at any time and will contain any entered marks. To enter a mark that is excluded by the rubric type a
"-" before the mark. This will result in it appearing on the
spreadsheet but not being included in the calculation. You can
quickly find the student using their student ID in the search box at the
top of the list of the results tab. Notice
that you may need to click on each question field to enter the mark -
in the current version the tab/arrow keys don't work properly on some
platforms.
