The Crime Survey:

The questionnaire consists of a total of 20 questions designed to assess your attitudes towards crime and punishment.

The first five questions relate to your knowledge of crime and the criminal justice system.

Please answer these questions to the best of your knowledge without asking anybody else and/or referring to other material.

    1. In the last 12 months, the total number of violent crimes in Aberystwyth has:

    2. Compared to 1995, the number of cars stolen in Wales in 2006/7 has:

    3. The number of murders committed in Ceredigion is the lowest in the UK:

    4. The number of domestic burglaries in Aberystwyth has changed by how much between 1995 and 2006/07:

    5. In the last 12 months all crime recorded by the police in Aberystwyth has:

For the second section simply select the answer from the drop-down box you think best describes your answer.

Please answer ALL questions - if you find that you don't fully agree with the whole statement or you are just unsure, then try and give your most probable answer or simply select "neither agree or disagree" if you really can't decide. If you have any comments to make about the questions please do so in the box at the end.

1. Life imprisonment is justified for certain crimes:

2. It is important to protect the rights of radicals and deviants in all ways:

3. There are many radical, immoral people in our country today, who are trying to ruin it for their own godless purposes, whom the authorities should put out of action:

4. There is no ‘ONE right way’ to live life; everybody has to create their own way:

5. Our country needs free thinkers who will have the courage to defy traditional ways, even if this upsets many people:

6. It would be best for everyone if the proper authorities censored magazines so that people could not get their hands on trashy and disgusting materials:

7. It is wonderful that young people today have greater freedom to protest against things they don’t like, and to make their own ‘rules’ to govern their behaviour:

8. What our country really needs, instead of more ‘civil rights’, is a good stiff dose of law and order:

9. Some of the best people in our country are those who are challenging our government, criticising religion, and ignoring the ‘normal way’ that things are supposed to be done:

10. Once our government leaders give us the ‘go ahead’, it will be the duty of every patriotic citizen to stomp out the rot that is poisoning out country from within:

11. We should treat protesters and radicals with open arms and open minds, since new ideas are often the lifeblood of progressive change:

12. The facts on crime, sexual immorality, and the recent public disorders all show we have to crack down hard on deviant groups and troublemakers if we are going to save our moral standards and preserve law and order:

The next three questions relate to the qualities that people think we should TRY to encourage in children. There might be instances when both or neither could apply, but try and select the option which you think is most appropriate the majority of the time.

For each question, select from the drop down menu which one of the two you think is the more important quality for a child to have.

Please select the question which best reflects your own feelings:

     1. It would be better if:

     2. It would be better if:

     3. It would be better if:
