How to work from public workstations safely.

You should work in the following way:

When you start work on a workstation, first click on the Explore my Computer icon and copy any files from a previous session (held on floppy disk or in your filestore) onto the My Documents as show above.

Try this....Start your software application,  first, open your file on the My Documents from within the application and then carry on with your work.  Save regularly onto the My Documents by going to the tool bar at the top left of the screen and choose

SAVE  (NOT SAVE AS).

When you have finished your session, close down your application, return to Explorer MY Computer  and make copies of your work into your filestore and also onto at least one floppy disk.

By doing this you have a very good chance of ensuring you have taken the best steps to safeguard your work.

Remember:  Computers rely on their hardware and environment to perform amazing tasks, but they are not foolproof.  Things can and do go wrong and you must be aware of this.

Practice now using Welcome.doc.  There is a copy ready to use in My Documents, which you copied and pasted there from you filestore in the previous exercise.

Click on the Word 2000 icon   Wait for it to load.

Using the mouse go to the File Menu along the top Tool Bar. Select File, then Open.

In the dialogue box, highlight Welcome.doc and click on Open.

Make a small change to  Welcome.doc.

Go back to File and choose Save.

Close down Word 2000. Click in the top right hand corner to close the application.

Don't forget to copy and paste this new version of your work to your filestore if you want to use this version again another time.
