Introduction

Understanding where you should store
your working files and why

Here at Aberystwyth you have access to a very wide range of computing services.  On the public workstations you can use a variety of software ranging from word processors, spreadsheets, databases and graphics packages to the huge resource of the World Wide Web.

In the course of your work here, you will probably generate a great many files and documents and you will need to know how to store and access them properly.  Every year a number of people visit a Help Desk with corrupt files and damaged floppy disks.  This often results in the loss of important work.

Remember:     Establishing good working practices right from the start can help you avoid  problems with your files, documents and data.

Never rely on only one copy of a file.  Always make a backup.  This means you should have at least two copies of a file, and in the case of important work, even more.
