Michael Woods is Professor of Human Geography and Director of the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Wales, Lampeter, and a PhD from Bristol University, and joined the Institute in 1996. He became Acting Director of IGES in July 2007, and Director in September 2008.

 Mike's research and teaching focus on rural and political geography, particularly rural politics and protest, community governance and globalization and rural place. He is coordinator for a European Union FP7 project on 'Developing Europe's Rural Regions in the Era of Globalization' (DERREG), and is involved with research on family farmers' responses to neoliberal globalisation in Australia (with Lynda Cheshire, Geoff Lawrence and Zlatko Skrbis, University of Queensland), and in the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD), a collaborative venture funded by HEFCW and the ESRC (with Martin Jones, Graham Gardner, Jesse Heley and Suzie Watkin). Mike Woods is Co-Director of the Wales Rural Observatory and a former Chair of the Political Geography Research Group of the RGS-IBG
