AUSCR Christmas Tour 2011
This weekend saw the traditional gathering of university students (and friends), past and present, for the Christmas Outing and Dinner. Current Master of the Bell Ringing Society, Cathy Ockwell had been hard at work beforehand, arranging church towers in Montgomeryshire and of course the venue for our Dinner, The Richmond Hotel. The weekend began on Friday night with a festive drink or two.
Despite the bleak temperature on Saturday morning, we headed out to our first parish church in Berriew (St Beuno), where we were pleasantly surprised to be fortified in numbers, by 6 other ringers. The 8 light bells were enjoyable and a variety of methods were rung, from Called Changes to Plain Bob Major. After a hearty lunch at “The Lion” we travelled onto our second tower, in the village of Llandinam.
The current church (St Llonio) is on the site of a Celtic monastery and houses a real mixture of bells, the treble (highest pitch) being the 4th heaviest and the 5th dating from c1440! After ringing a selection of doubles and minor methods, including the seasonal St Nicholas Doubles, we made our way to our last tower in Llanidloes.
St Idloes (as with the previous tower) has been augmented by adding lighter bells to a previous set, in this case making the two lightest bells a little tricky to ring. The ground floor ring of 8 bells required some effort, but a touch of Grandsire triples was achieved, amongst some Plain Hunt and Called Changes. The day concluded, following a quick change, with our Christmas feast and party games at The Richmond Hotel.
No bell ringing weekend would be complete without service ringing, in this case at the tower in Llanbadarn (St Padarn) where several of the gathered learnt to ring. Here we concluded our weekend following some well-struck ringing on all 10 bells.
