Constitution 2006

1. This society shall be called "Aberystwyth Methodist Society".

2. The Mission Statement of the society is: "To demonstrate and extend the Kingdom of God in the student community life of Aberystwyth and the locality."

3. The purpose of the society is to provide for all students, both Christian and non-Christian from all denominations. It is a society which focuses on God and seeks to be a witness to the community at large, and particularly the student body. It is there to provide fellowship for students where they can explore the Christian faith within a Christian environment.

4. All registered members of the Aberystwyth Guild of students and members if staff of UWA may attend meetings of the society.

5. Voting rights shall be the prerogative of those who are eligible under clause 4 to sign the membership book and have done so.

6. The committee shall consist of: The Chaplin, The Staff President, The Student President, The Vice President, The Secretary, The Treasurer, The Prayer Secretary, The Bible Study Secretary, The Music Secretary, The Social and Charities Secretary.[LINK]

7. The committee may co-opt other members as necessary.

8. Two thirds of the Committee shall constitute quorum at Committee meetings.

9. Elections shall be held for all committee posts, except those of Chaplin and Staff President, at the Annual General Meeting.

10. The Staff President shall be appointed by the Committee and will normally stand for one year, but may stand for further years.

11. The Student President shall appoint two people as Steering Committee acting as tellers during voting at elections.

12. All nominations for Committee posts shall be required to have affirmed complete acceptance of the Christian doctrines as expounded in the Nicene Creed. This declaration shall have taken place before the election commences.

13. Nominations for the new Committee shall be called on the night of the AGM.

14. Nominations must be signed by the nominee, proposer and seconder and shall be handed to the Student President, or other member of the Committee.

15. Each member may propose one candidate for each post but need not make nominations for all posts.

16. Voting for the election of Committee shall be conducted by means of a secret ballot. Each position shall be decided by a simple majority.

17. The posts shall be considered separately in the above order.

18. The Student President shall have casting vote.

19. At least five days notice shall be given of any general meeting.

20. The Committee shall notify all members of the Society of all General Meetings.

21. The AGM shall be held in the second half of the Autumn term.

22. One third of the members listed in the membership book shall act as a quorum at General Meetings.

23. Minutes shall be kept of all General and Committee meetings and shall be approved at the next meeting. The minute book may be inspected by any member of the society.

24. Accounts shall be kept and produced on demand by any member of the society or Guild Committee.

25. An account of expenditure shall be given at committee meetings and at the AGM.

26. Any member of the society representing the society in any capacity shall be approved by the committee.

27. The society may amend the Constitution at a General Meeting by two thirds majority of those present as members. Any proposed change in the Constitution shall be given to the Committee in writing.

28. A General Meeting may be called by: The Chaplin The Committee Half of those members who have signed the Membership book

29. On any matter not dealt with in the Constitution the Committee"s decision shall be final.
