The Scene
Pride Scence
Gay village? If you want to hit a big LGBT venue you've got at least 2 hours travelling to do, so take advantage of the events run by AberPride.
Socials
Every week we have at least one social event. Regular as clockwork on a Wednesday at the Court Royal Hotel at 7.30pm we meet before hand in the Art Centre at 6.30pm(ish).
This year watch out for Tom, your Ents officer he's planning some pretty big stuff along the lines of themed socials etc. We also hold regular coffee socials it's nice to just sit around and chat……and eat cake!
Trips
Although Abers nice we all need to get away some time this is were once again Tom will be providing an exciting selection of trips. Club trips to places like Manchester, Birmingham, and Cardiff, when we go out on these trips we usually hook up with other local LGBT groups so they can show us the best places to go . Plus days out shopping, theme parks and activities. Don't forget if you've got an idea for a trip let us know!
Scene
This is where we make up for the lack of a gay bar in Aber. We turn the union into one! Yup once a month we take over the Joint for a night of varied music (you can even DJ if you want) drinks promos and crazy dancing!
Aber Scene
So what does the Aber Scene offer? Not much outside the society events, however there are a few places which are good fun and most places in Aber are gay friendly.
Rummers: It's a bar you're not likely to forget; the sawdust on the floor and the candlelit tables will be etched on your memory forever.
The Union: Cheap drinks, and music till late, the Union offers some really good nights and a society favourite is Reload!
The Bay: The moment you walk in the place you can tell it's for students!! Catch it on a good night and you'll have a good time. Indiesoc on a Monday night is popular amongst those whose musical tastes are a little more varied. ;-)
Varsity: A really good place to start the night - don't forget a V-Card, it will save you money in the long run.
Bar E: Very much like Varsity, but if you find Varsity too busy then Bar E is usually quieter
Wetherspoons: The standard chain of drinking establishments, cheap food and drink to keep any student happy.
The Cambrian: If you like cocktails then this is the place to be!
...to name just a few - remember there are at least 50 places to drink in Aber!
Other Scenes
The nearest three scenes to us are Birmingham, Cardiff and Swansea.
Birmingham offers a wide variety of places to go: Glamourous Show Bar which is a small basement bar, The Green Room where the food is good, and a relaxed atmosphere can be found for pre-clubbing meals. Missing is a very popular place, cheesy music, male strippers, and the drag queens are funny. Angels Cafe Bar which is one of the original scene venues offers a snack menu and a relaxed attitude. Route Two is a cheap place to go and is a good pre-club venue. The Village is good for a week day pint, though at the weekend it becomes a slightly hardcore club! Last but not least The Nightingale Club and DV8 both are very student friendly and offer really good nights out. DV8 also hold Poptastic every month!
Cardiff offers Club X the busiest and arguably best gay friendly club! Then you have Exit Club with Bar/Disco with a good friendly mix of people. Wow (formerly DV8) which offers great dance mix. Then we go around the bars - the traditional 'gay' style pub The Golden Cross, then Kings Cross which is newly refurbished as well as The Edge which is above Club X and offers a popular pre-club bar and chill out zone, as well as The Packet.
Swansea LGBT scene is near Wind Street and on the High Street. Just off Wind Street you will find The Exchange, which is a relaxed friendly pub. On the High Street you will find Champers, The King's Arms, which features local celebrity drag queen CC Swan every Saturday, and a jointbar and club called Creation and Eden. There is a varied programme of music and events and there are often special guest appearances by celebrities and singers.
...and if you have the money, a trip up to Manchester's 'Gay Village' or London's Soho are well worth it ... if only to have a weekend away from Aber!!
