EPSRC Physical Sciences fellowship panel

EPSRC Physical Sciences fellowship panel

April 2016 - Rudi attended an interview panel to help prioritise a number of postgraduate, early career and established fellowship applications. This proved quite difficult given that the applicants asked for interview had already mastered a regular paper-based prioritisation panel and all applications were therefore very impressive. It makes it clear that what is needed is adequate science funding, not more and more hurdles to jump before any money is allocated! [more external link]

Nathan at the Hercules School

March 2016 - Nathan won a place on the Hercules School (what a lovely acronym for Higher European Research Course for Users of Large Experimental Systems), a five-week intensive course in all aspects of synchrotron radiation and neutrons. The theory part is hosted at the ESRF in Grenoble, while the participants are spread out around a number of European central facilities for the practical component of the course. Nathan did his practical at Elettra in Trieste and also got to play with their free electron laser. He also won a postgraduate travel grant from the Institute of Physics (IoP) as a contribution to the costs of his attendance at Hercules. [more external link]

SANS experiment on solvent-annealed diblocks on SANS2d

SANS experiment on solvent-annealed diblocks on SANS2d

March 2016 - Nathan, Pierre and Rudi had an experiment on the SANS2d beamline at Isis to study the effects of solvent annealing on the morphology of diblock co-polymer films. Local contact Sarah Rogers looked after us, explaining how to run data through the Mantid software and weeding out some artefacts in the data from multiple scattering of our silicon substrates... I14 beamline working group at Diamond

I14 beamline working group at Diamond

March 2016 - Rudi attended a meeting of the working group for the new nanofocus beamline I14 currently under construction at Diamond. Most of the meeting was to consider progress being made on the nanoprobe endstation and to prioritise experimental techniques to be supported at the start of operations. An update followed on the delivery of the associated electron microscope facility, which will be run for users in the same way as beamlines are. [more external link]

Research visitor from Paris

March 2016 - Pierre Harispuru from the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris (Chimie ParisTech) has joined us for six months to work on morphologies of polymer films with embedded nano-particles of different shapes, mostly using imaging techniques such as AFM and imaging ellipsometry. Back in Paris, Pierre works with Odile Majerus, who is a former colleague here in Aber. [more external link]
