Curved Ridge
Buachaille Etive Mor
Saturday 18 March 2006

Encountered lean snow at low altitude but with an overnight hard freeze so Mark and I decided to head north from the camping area at Victoria Bridge over Rannoch Moor to take on a winter classic on Buachaille Etive Mor. Perfect clear and cool weather accompanied the walk in and acted as a great appetiser for the climb ahead.

We were soon kitted up and pushing on up the first snow covered rock ribs in perfect conditions. The steeper rock breaks offered stimulating mixed climbing but with good rope protection. We climbed, taking alternate leads and made good progress over the first more technical section onto the pleasant snow ridge and ledges above with the imposing Rannoch Wall to our right.

The route progressed through dramatic mixed climbing with breathtaking views towards Glen Etive. Eventually emerged on the exit snow field and the fine gully cutting up to the head of Crowberry Gully.

After one more steeper icy section to flank North Buttress we emerged onto the upper slope and were soon sat in the firm snow at the summit cairn, enjoying the fine winter scenery as we packed away ropes, harnesses and hardware.

Descended from the col to Coire na Tulaich, sliding down the upper steep sections for some fun and to save a lot of snow steps! Great route and fortunate to experience it in such good conditions.
