I was educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School and Trinity College Cambridge, where I read Mathematics. I have been a member of the Computer Science Department at Aberystwyth since 1979; I was head of the department from 1990 to 2000 and I am now largely, but not completely, retired. Before moving to Aberystwyth, I was for two years a Visiting Professor at the University of Missouri, and I worked for nine years in the software industry and for six years in the University of Cambridge.
During my academic career, I have taught courses on most aspects of computing but in recent years my main interest has been in the area generally known as professional issues. I currently give some lectures on legal issues relating to computing and some lectures on mobile communications. I have written extensively on professional issues and I have also enjoyed translating two books (see below).
I have been an active member of the British Computer Society since 1964, with particular involvement in the Society's examinations and its accreditation activities. Over the years I have given a number of talks to BCS branches. The text of a talk on Pornography, the Internet and the Law, which I have given to several branches, can be found here.
I am also interested in musicology and musical history. Jointly with Dulais Rhys I have written a biography of Joseph Parry (see below). The texts of two talks I have given on Parry are available on the web: Joseph Parry in Aberystywth and Publishing Joseph Parry’s Music.
