Apêl Elain – 2011 Borth Beach 10k Race Report.

Time and tide are the traditional challenges of this race as runners have to complete the course before it disappears under the advancing seas.  This year though, extensive sea defence work on the beach gave runners an additional challenge as the course was altered to include a stretch of softer sand between 4 and 6 kilometres.  This is a temporary change and means that this year’s winners will forever be holders of the revised course records – and so they rose to the challenge.  

With temperatures in the high teens, a steady sea breeze and the skies always promising but never delivering rain these were ideal conditions.  Sixty one runners from all parts of the country assembled at the start line and just as the tide began to turn they headed away in the distance.  Over a long, even course it takes an age before the pack shrinks out of view. Out of sight they follow the revised route close to the Dovey estuary  to be treated with picture postcard views of the hills and villages on the far shores before turning back into the wind to retrace the route.  Gradually, the leaders emerge from the distance and in what seemed to take an age they descended on the finish. In first place was Jonathan Pugh 36:10 – a unique record – behind him and fighting for position came Gwynant Jones 36:44 of Maldwyn Harriers and Glyn Price, Sarn Helen,  36:47. 

In fifth place overall but taking the MVet 40 prize was  Dennis Walmsley of Burton Road Runners 38:20. First MVet 50 was Dave Powell, Aberystwyth AC, 41:48.   A tight battle in the MVet 60 category finished with honours going to Geraint Roderick, Deeside AC , 46:45. The Under 20 male prize went to Jamie Evans, Merrionydd RC, 41:24.

With a characteristic sprinting finish Cheryl Hughes, Aberystwyth AC, 47:39  took the Ladies first prize, and record.  In second spot was Anita Worthing, Aberystwyth AC 48:12, whilst third spot went to Lucy Garrod, Abingdon Amblers, 50:39.

Stephanie Davies, Shropshire Shufflers, 58:14 took the  VLadies 35 category.  Debbie Morgan, Worcester AC, 1:02:18, was VLadies 45,  Helen Stretch, Aberystwyth AC, 59:59 took VLadies 55 whilst VLadies 60 went to Marj Griffiths, Bro Dysynni, 1:08:33.

The 1 mile Junior race saw some excellent running.  Tom May, Redditch & Bromsgrove, 5:45 was first in the Under 15 Boys category followed by Jacob Short, 6:20 and Llyr ap  Einion, Aberystwyth AC, 6:21.    The Under 11 Boys category was won by Niall Coleridge, 6:31 followed by Aled Jones, Aberystwyth AC, 6:34 and Henry Sherrington Lodge 7:37.

Second overall but winning the Under 15 Girls was Emily Thomas, Carmarthen AC, 6:18, followed by Nicole Wildman, 9:23 and Katie Stokes 9:31.  The Under 11 Girls category saw some great times but winner was Rose James, Brecon AC, 7:59 followed by Eve Bridgewater, 8:05 and Alice Wildman, 9:05.

The race will return to its traditional course next year where the challenge will once again be to keep feet dry and smash the old records. In the meantime this year’s winners will know that this year’s records are theirs forever.

Aberystwyth AC Results

A total of 15 Aber AC runners took part in this year’s race. First to finish was Shelley Childs in 39:51 – just beating his time at Newtown to set a season’s best.  

A huge thanks to everyone who helped out  organisation and marshalling – especially to Goronwy Evans  and Paul Rose for taking this year’s long walk to the end and to Helen Marshall for the lonely job of manning the fort and cranking the results.

Congratulations to the winners: Men's 10K - Mark Smith (Aberystwyth AC) 35:49 course record; Women's 10K - Deb Sault (Stourport & Kidderminster AC) 45:02; Under 15 Boy's 1 mile - Steven Williams (Aberystwyth AC) 5:49 course record; Under 15 Girl's 1 mile - Emily Thomas (Aberystwyth AC) 6:09 course record; Under 12 Boy's 1 mile -Niall Coleridge 6:49 and Under 12 Girl's 1 mile 7:14. Thank you to all of the 120 plus runners who competed including over 40 juniors. Once the 2011 Tide Tables are available next year's date and time will be fixed, it is likely to be the first Sunday in August but please check this page for confirmation.
