Jem Rowland
Now retired, I was a senior lecturer and a member of the Computer Science Department's Bioinformatics
Research Group.
My research interests are robotics and automation for
biotechnology, along with intelligent methods of interpreting
data from analytical instrumentation, especially methods based on
evolutionary computation.
I was closely involved in the design, development and implementation
of our Robot
Scientist projects, in particular:
- I was closely involved in specifying, commissioning and
fine-tuning our highly automated laboratory system for
functional genomics, which demonstrated closed loop
investigation, defining and executing its own cycle of
experiments leading to the discovery of new knowledge.
- I led the team specifying and procuring a complex system of
automated instruments and robotics for our new generation Robot
Scientist, Eve, which is a fully automated system that
implements a new approach to drug discovery. Eve has
produced important new knowledge revealing potential treatments
for one of the world's major diseases.
