The Pictorial Bible III/The Aural Bible I: Transfigurations. In
the Christian bible 'Transfiguration' denotes Christ's glorification
on the mount. More usually the term refers to a marked change (or
crossing-over) of one form into another. Within the context of this
research project, the form (that is, the pre-compositional material
which is subjected to a process of conversion) comprises texts drawn
from the Judaeo-Christian bible, while the resultant 'transforms'
are visual and audible artefacts. Transfigurations is the
third project in The Pictorial Bible series. Following
Settings of the Psalms (2000) and Seal up the Vision and
Prophecy (2007), it investigates ways in which biblical texts
can be transposed into visual and (in this project) audible
artefacts without recourse to representation or traditional
musicality. The process of 'imaging' involves rendering words as
pictures and sounds using systems of codification and strategies for
transformation derived from, or implicit within, the biblical texts
[exhibition and performances].
Publications
The Bible as Art. The book addresses the
need not only for artists to deepen their understanding of biblical
theology, themes, and stories but also for biblical scholars to
better comprehend the ways in which biblical images (traditional and
modern) serve as a significant (albeit nonverbal) exegetical tool,
as an articulation of doctrine, theology, and belief, and as an
influential mode of biblical, cultural reception [single-authored book].
