E-mail address: iag@aber.ac.uk

Education: Ysgol Eifionydd, Porthmadog; The University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. BSc & PhD in Zoology.

Membership of Professional Organisations etc.: Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society; Member of Y Gymdeithas Wyddonol Genedlaethol (The Welsh Scientific Society); Member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists.

My name: For those who do not understand Cymric ways my name means Iolo son of Gwynn. i.e. 'ap' means 'son of'. My two sons are therefore called, respectively 'Llyr ap Iolo' and 'Rhys ap Iolo'. The feminine form 'ach' is rarely used and it is nowadays customary simply to omit it. Therefore my daughter is called 'Rhian Iolo'. There is no such thing as a surname, or family, name in our way of doing things. Some people use the mother's name instead, so Rhian could just have easily been called 'Rhian Ellen'. Many common 'surnames' in Wales are derived from this way of naming, e.g. Pritchard is derived from 'ap Rhisiart', Puw / Pugh is derived from 'ap Huw', Bevan is derived from 'ab Ifan' and Preece is derived from 'ap Rhys'. The same applies to 'Powell', 'Probert' & 'Prydderch'. 'ap Sion' became Jones, 'ab Ifan' also became Evans and 'ap Gwilym' became Williams. This all happened when the English administration imposed its ways upon us. Currently there is an increasing tendency amongst Welsh parents to revert to our traditional method of naming their offspring. Strictly speaking my eldest son should be called Llyr ap Iolo ap Gwynn ap Huw ap ........etc., thus following the male lineage in a family as far back as possible.

Research interests: Electron microscopy, and its application to a variety of problems. Image analysis as a means of extracting useful information from microscopic images. Cell biology, with a special interest in how the cytoskeleton plays a key role in cellular processes, modulated by the cell cycle phases. The micromorphology of articular cartilage. Much of this work is carried out in collaboration with the AO Research Institute, Davos Platz, Switzerland. See recent publications.

Teaching: In 1988 the Biological Electron Microscopy postgraduate Diploma/MSc course was established. This was the only one of its kind in Europe. Undergraduate teaching comprises: First Year: First year tutor; IT for biologists; Cell Biology. Second Year: Cell and Developmental Biology, IT for Biologists, Invertebrate nervous systems and locomotion; Third Year: Project supervision. Now retired.

Some related outside work I have been or am involved with: Chair of the Trustees of the Centre for Alternative Technology. Member of the Executive Committee of 'Y Gymdeithas Wyddonol Genedlaethol' (The Welsh National Scientific Society). Member of the Council of the National Museum Wales. Vice-Chair of the Snowdonia National Park Authority; Former member, Secretary and Chair of The Wales Mountain Leader Training Board..

Other interests: Politics (Long-time member of Plaid Cymru - Past Chair of constituency party and election agent to Cynog Dafis AM and Simon Thomas MP,), Mountaineering, Skiing, Photography and DIY.
