The graph below shows how the Si 2p core level peak is attenuated during deposition of Copper Phtalocyanine onto the surface. This graph consists of approximately 10,000 snapshots each of 100ms duration.

This picture shows the real advantage of this real-time approach to electron spectroscopy. From the shape of the peak and the way in which it is attenuated, it is possible to deduce important characteristics about the way the organic molecule behaves as it is deposited on the surface of the silicon.

This sort of work underpins the development of new materials for electronics devices.
