CFER Meeting 2015: Raring to go!

Posted on 15th July 2014 by Debbie

Early plans for the 4th Colloquium for Equine Reproduction meeting, 2015, are underway and an exciting programme is in place. Once again, the British Society for Animal Science (BSAS) have invited CFER back to be hosted within their annual conference. The BSAS conference takes place on 14th and 15th April. We will confirm soon which afternoon on those days CFRE will be-watch this space and see our '2015 Meeting' tab.

This year the venue will be Chester University. There will be two CFER sessions. Firstly 'Advances in reproduction research' will be an opportunity to listen to the latest science conducted by our key note speaker, the world-renowned veterinary scientist, Dr Mandi DeMestre, from the Royal Veterinary College. Mandi's presentation will be followed by short oral communications; if you would like to present any research you have recently conducted, whether at graduate level or beyond, please submit an abstract via the BSAS website. We welcome all submissions. Abstract format and submission guidelines will appear there soon. Our industry based session will be led by Jan Rogers from the British Equestrian Federation who will outline how the BEF support breeding and research, especially through MSc projects.

If you are coming to Chester, BSAS will also be running their annual equine-specific sessions the morning before CFER, which aims to share research findings in other areas of equine science. Speakers confirmed for 2015 are Dr Meriel Moore-Colyer (Royal Agricultural University), discussing advances in equine nutrition, and Dr Celia Marr (Rossdales and Partners Newmarket), discussing cardiac health in the performance horse as the key-note presentation in the Equine Performance and Sports Medicine session. Well worth taking in while you are there!

BSAS 2014

Posted on 3rd Jan 2013 by Debbie

As you know, the Colloquium For Equine Reproduction will be returning in 2015, once again kindly hosted by the British Society for Animal Science (BSAS) within their annual conference.  Meanwhile, you may be interested to know that the 2014 BSAS annual conference, held at the University of Nottingham, has two dedicated equine sessions which you and your colleagues may be interested to attend.

The equine sessions will be held on Tues 29th April starting at 10.30am. The first session, ‘Advances in Equine Science ‘, aims to provide a collection of presentations giving a broad ‘snap shot’ overview of the latest research advances in several areas of equine science for our wide audience, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, vets, lecturers and those from the industry. The session boasts key note speakers Andy Durham (Liphook Equine Hospital) and Bruce McGorum (Edinburgh University Veterinary School). Presentation will include updates on equine metabolic syndrome (Andy Durham) and grass sickness (Bruce McGorum), followed by shorter presentations on feeding high starch and fibre diets on behaviour, gene regulation in aging chondrocytes and reproduction, including John Newcombe (Warren House Veterinary Centre), speaking on mare seasonality. Quite an eclectic mix!

After lunch, the ‘Equine Exercise and Performance’ session is scheduled from 1.30 until 3pm and Sue Dyson (The Animal Health Trust) is our key note speaker presenting on the horse-rider interface. Following this, shorter presentation will be made, including an assessment of the variation in measurements of movement made using inertial measurement units (The Royal Veterinary College), the effect of chiropractic treatment on carpal and tarsal joints, and statistical models for evaluating recovery heart rates.

For those of you especially interested in teaching and learning, a new session taking place on the following day will share lecturer experiences and good practice for teaching animal sciences at HE level. This may be of particular interest for those of you who may be working towards teaching qualifications etc.

If you would like further information relating to the remainder of the programme, registration details and logistical matters please see the conference we page:

The science sessions ‘Advances in equine reproduction science’ include updates on latest research from Dr Sandra Wilsher (The equine placenta as a clue to neonatal health) and Jennifer Paddison (Pre-Implantation factor applications for equine reproduction). The industry session ‘How can industry benefit from research?’ will be see Jos Mottershead (equine-reproduction.com) present an over-view of how useful scientific research is to maintaining and advancing grass-roots breeding (‘The researcher and user in the field-a two way street or a stop sign?’).

Our public forum also returns in 2013 and this year will include chance to view posters that show-case recent research from workers in the UK and Ireland, and participate in group discussions according to areas of interest, driven by a designated spokesperson. This is your opportunity to have your say about how science could improve your day-to-day commercial breeding practice.
