The Aberystwyth Fantasy and Science Fiction Society is a society dedicated to the dissemination of high quality science fiction and fantasy to the students of Aberystwyth University. This noble sentiment manifests itself most frequently in the form of weekly screenings, usually held on a Wednesday night (during term-time) in D5 Hugh Owen.
More often than not, an evening's films will be based around some theme or other; at the beginning of last year we had "people-going-inside-of-other-people" (where the choice was between TRON, Innerspace and Ghost in the Shell) and "Dystopic Futures" (Brazil, RoboCop, THX 1138). Subsequent nights have included "Cute Robots", "Kubrick" and "Hideous Amounts of Gore".
From the films offered, society members vote for those they would most like to watch. The film with the highest number of votes gets shown. Additionally, members are encouraged to bring along their own films and to convince us of why we should watch them. That it fit in with the night's other offerings is not required, though this does tend to help.
As well as the movies we show TV show episodes. These are dealt with along similar lines, though it is not at all necessary for them to fit the theme or even to be fantasy or science fiction; bring whatever you like.
In regard to socials, after the weekly screenings we go down into town for the usual drink-fuelled merriment. Other less frequent occurrences occur less frequently, details of which are emailed out to the mailing list. To be put on said list, email club02@aber.ac.uk.
Finally, the feasibility of a society library was being looked at, that there might be a central repository of both DVDs and books for society members to play with. More details one day.
With all this in mind, please browse through these pages, learn more about us and come along to a screening in the coming year.
