Java psychomorph

August 2026

Lightweight version (recommended)

I've taken out some dependecies on rarley used libraries to make it easier to install and run:

https://users.aber.ac.uk/bpt/jpsychomorph/version7/PsychoMorphLite.jar

In theory double clicking it would work, but the MacOS security settings don't let me, but I can run it from the Terminal using:

java -jar PsychoMorphLite.jar

(when in the same folder as the jar file).

You will probably find that you want more memory allocated to it than the default, you can use the additional command line switch -Xmx4g to allocate 4Gb of ram i.e.

java -jar PsychoMorphLite.jar -Xmx4g

A basic guide to using the software was written by Clare Sutherland:

A basic guide to Psychomorph
Full version (not recommended)

You can download version 7.1 from here:

PsychoMorph7.1.zip

which you should be able to run from the command line (windows Command Prompt, or Terminal in MacOS) after navigating to the extracted folder, using something like:

java -cp dist/*;deploylib/* -Xmx4000m -Djava.security.policy=applet.policy Facemorph.psychomorph.PsychoMorphForm

for windows, or for macos use this version:

java -cp dist/*:lib/* -Xmx4000m -Dapple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true -Djava.security.policy=applet.policy Facemorph.psychomorph.PsychoMorphForm

It was compiled with java open jdk 11 (so you may need to upgrade/downgrade your java version to run it). I got it from here (need to scroll down a bit to find the right version):

https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase-downloads.html

If you get an "out of memory error" you can use a smaller value for the max heap size e.g.

-Xmx1000m

asks for 1Gb of heap space, rather than the 4Gb in the commands above.

Some example images to start playing with are available here images.zip

Help pages are provided on the wiki. Details of the API (e.g. for writing plugins) are available here.

Some other (possibly) useful data is available here extra.zip. This includes some masks, symmetry file and wavelet filters.
