Course Development
I am one of the
major contributors to the Honours degree course in Education at Aberystwyth.. I
introduced the multicultural education option in the course for our PGCE students
in 1974 - the first of its kind in this country at university level. Following my initiative, other sister
colleges developed such options for the PGCE and Master’s degree level.
Furthermore, multicultural education has also been offered to our Honours
degree students for the last ten years.
The quality of instruction I provide
is attested by the following quotation from the inspection of the teaching of the multi-cultural course to
PGCE students: “Lecturer is well
qualified in educational psychology ... there is a good range of teaching
approaches ... Good use is made of overseas students with relevant experience
... students’ spontaneity augurs well for the successful realisation of course
objectives.” In addition,
students’ evaluation of my courses have
ranged from ‘good’ to ‘satisfactory’ on a three point scale, A, B, C.
(4) Membership of
Departmental Committees and Other Responsibilities:
Planning
Committee.
Research
Committee.
(c) As a representative of both Department and College I have served on the following bodies:
(i) National
Foundation for Education & Research (NFER).
(ii) Advisory Group of academics to help
compile a Bibliography on the
cultural
context of Science and Mathematics Education (
University).
(iii)
The National Committee for
the Teaching of Mother Tongues.
My books have been reviewed favourably by many
academic and professional journals. Academic journals which are reviewing the
‘Child-Rearing in Ethnic Minorities’ Include: Welsh Journal of Education, Educational
Research - the NFER journal (Children
and Society - Journal of the National Children’s Bureau - Journal of Punjab studies - Sage Publication.).
I have been awarded several grants from the
university Faculty of Education and from the Hughes-Parry fund, the Nuffield
Foundation and the College Research Fund in support of my research and
publications.
I have refereed papers for the British Journal of Educational Psychology,
the International Journal of Applied
Psychology and the International
Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.
I am on the team of referees for the Journal
of Education for
Teachers and I also review papers for Gender and Education.
I was amongst the few academics (12) who were
invited to contribute to a World Health Organisation (WHO) - sponsored seminar on the mental health of
ethnic minorities which was held at Oxford in July, 1981, and the group has
subsequently met many times to review policies and practices.
I have organised symposia in my area of research
for the following professional bodies:
Educational section of the British Psychological Society; British
Educational Research Association and the International Association for
Cross-cultural Psychology. I have read
16 papers at international conferences in my area of speciality and 6 at
