Postgraduate research areas - 2011/12

This page describes some of the postgraduate research areas I'm interested in supervising. Please contact me (Amanda Clare, afc@aber.ac.uk) if interested in doing a PhD with us in one of these areas (or if you have similar ideas).

1. Data mining and machine learning for plant genomics

With the advent of new sequencing equipment and the forthcoming Phenomics Centre, IBERS are beginning to produce large amounts of data about the plants that they study. There are many new data mining techniques we would like to create/apply/enhance, including multi-relational learning and the use of indexed data structures for large volumes of data.

2. Executable specifications of biological sequences

When we conduct genome engineering, the initial, transitional and resulting sequences can be difficult to describe. Can we create a better language for such descriptions and can we make these descriptions executable?
